*UPDATED* Virtual TSSEC Information for Texas Twirlers!

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

*UPDATES* We posted the below blog last week, but since then there has been an update to the TSSEC Virtual Twirling Contest and we want to make sure everyone is aware.

Update #1 - The due date for video submissions has been pushed back to May 21st! This gives everyone an additional week to get their videos recorded and submitted to their band directors. Try to have your videos to your director by May 17th to ensure they have time troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

*EDIT* Originally there was information sent out from the UIL Offices that twirlers were not allowed to use music in their video unless they had copywrite permission. However, after conflicting information was received, we emailed Bradley Kent, the Director of Music for UIL, directly asking for clarification and a single answer on the subject. We got written clarification that twirlers DO NOT need permission to use their music and are free to perform to the song of their choice on their video submission.

May is here which means many of our #TeamTexas Twirlers are turning their attention to the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Twirling Competition! While that is still true this year, there are even more questions than normal due to this year's event being done via virtual submission. To help our Texas Twirlers better understand the process and be more prepared, we have reached out to one of the TSSEC Twirling Judges, Whitney King Coons, for some clarifications and FAQs.

UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble - Virtual Twirling Contest

UIL State will look a little different this year as it goes virtual. What does this means for twirlers this year? They will be submitting a pre-recorded video of the their UIL twirling routine to be watched and judged by their State UIL Twirling Judge. There will not be any live element for 2021. Have any questions? Email texastwirlcontact@gmail.com and we will try to find the answers for you!

Who: Twirlers who have qualified for UIL State and their Band Director has signed up to compete in the UIL TSSEC Twirling Competition (Deadline to register was April 15th).

When: The deadline for Band Directors to submit the twirling videos to the UIL is May 15th May 21st (*Updated*). However, we recommend you submit to your Band Director by May 9th to provide them with time to submit before May 15th May 21st (*Updated*) or for you to adjust in case anything goes wrong with the initial submission.

What: Record the UIL twirling routine that you would like to be submitted to your State UIL Twirling Judge. The typical recorded routine will be less than 3.5 minutes long and recorded on an iPhone or Android device.

How: Submit the sharable link to your Band Director. Your Band Director will copy and paste the shared links into texasmusicforms.com. The typical submission will be recorded on a phone and uploaded to a computer to be shared via a google drive link, although you have the ability to upload the video to google drive from your phone as well. See upload recommendations below.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What Is An Introduction and What Do I Include?
The(a) student performer is to say the following on video prior to the performance: “My name is (first and last name) and I(we) will be performing a baton twirling solo/ensemble to the song (title) by (name).”

What Do I Do If I Already Did My Video Without An Introduction?
Twirlers who have already recorded their videos and did not add an intro can add the intro to the beginning of their video as long as the twirling portion isn’t edited. If you already submitted to your band directors, but did not do an intro at the beginning, please add it in and resubmit.

What Is The Best Recommendation for Uploading?
You can use Google Drive, YouTube, Dropbox or Box to upload your video, but make sure that you provide a link that is accessible to anyone with the link. ANY VIDEOS THAT ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE BY THE JUDGE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Below is information on how to upload and share the video with your Band Director via Google Drive.

From May 22nd-31st the virtual submissions will be adjudicated and the results posted as they are available.
