Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

For those that caught the first post of the 2017 Texas Collegiate Twirler Audition Guide, you got to see our one stop shop for Collegiate Try-Out information. Our goal with this feature is to present as much audition information for Texas universities in one place as possible to at least make the process of knowing how to audition easier for our Collegiate twirler hopefuls. We hope it has been helpful!

If you have any information to update any of these listings, or have information for a University not listed, please email texastwirlcontact@gmail.com. We will be posting updates as new updates become available, and today we were able to add the Texas State University and Stephen F Austin University information (edited to add Sam Houston State University as well!

Contest Follow Up Series - ATX Holiday Twirl Fest 2016

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

This post is running about a month late, but I wanted to make sure we still introduce this new series, the Contest Follow Up Series! This is where we do a post after a contest summing up the winners, some of the highlights, and sharing any fun post-contest information from the Contest Directors.

Our first follow up is the ATX Holiday Twirl Fest that occurred on Saturday, December 10th, 2016.

Fun Facts!
*This contest was attended by 86 twirlers from all over Texas.
*The Contest Directors were Ashley Wood & Whitney Coons
*Judges included Head Judge Shirley Payne (Dallas), John "Baton" Mitchell (Las Vegas), Deb Akins Herbster (Austin) Marlene Torres (Odessa), Dr. Coral Noonan-Terry (Austin), and Vicki Ray (Fort Worth).
*Awards handed out included over 130 medals, 26 tiaras, 20 rhinestone headbands, and 110 trophies

Pageant Winners! 
For each Contest Follow Up Series post, we will take a moment to recognize the winners of the Modeling/Mini and Twirling pageants. Congrats to the following twirlers for doing an amazing job.

Hashtag Shout Out!
As was mentioned in the Contest Calendar Series post, if you use the contest hashtag, #atxtwirlfest2016, you might see your picture here on the blog. Shout out to Victoria, Josie, Anna, & Ginger, Breckyn, and Payton! We loved seeing all your tagged pictures.

Featured Event
This contest features a special event called the Laura Craft Honorary Best Costume Award. This event was created to honor Contest Director Ashley Wood's mother who successfully battled breast cancer in 2015. Since Ashley's mom made all her costumes when she competed, her mom called the "Best Costume" award the "Mommy Award", thus it was only fitting that this be the event to honor breast cancer fighters.

As part of this event, the $10 entry fee was donated directly to Twirling for the Cure. Between the 34 twirlers that competed in the Best Costume event and additional donors, the contest was able to donate $475.00!

The event was judged by John Mitchell, Marlene Torres, and Dr. Coral Noonan-Terry. They selected the Top Ten Finalists from the 34 and awarded the overall Best Costume Winner title to Miss Jenna Bowen.

The award was presented by Ashley's mother - Laura Craft, TFTC Representative - John Mitchell, and Twirl ATX Moms/Breast Cancer Survivors - Shannon Sorenson and Michele Burton.

Final Note
The contest was attended by awesome photographer, and iblogbands blogger, Rebecca Lyon Hedges. Rebecca is a former twirler who has a knack for catching crystal clear action photos. Rebecca took quite a few great shots which are all available for purchase as digital downloads or prints.

2017 Event Save the Date
Currently the tentative date for the 2017 ATX Holiday Twirl Fest is Saturday, December 9th 2017 at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, TX. Make sure to mark your calendar for this weekend!

We know senior year is a very exciting time for many twirlers, but it is also a little nerve wracking as twirlers try to decide which University to select. While this is already a hard decision, when you have a dream of twirling on the collegiate level, it adds an addition level of pressure for picking the right place. There are also many current college students that may be deciding between auditioning at their school or other schools. So many choices! Our goal with this feature is to present as much audition information for Texas universities in one place as possible to at least make the process of knowing how to audition easier for our Collegiate twirler hopefuls.

Contest Calendar Series - Dallas Twirling Festival 2017

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

We are back! We had a a bit of a break as the new year began and the competition season kicked into gear, but no worries. We have some really exciting posts coming up, as well as some amazing contests to look forward to. 

Today, for our Contest Calendar Series we will be discussing the 2017 Dallas Twirling Festival!

*DEADLINE THURSDAY* Please note that the deadline for this competition is Thursday, January 26th, 2017. You must have your entry postmarked by this day. There are two entry forms available: one for Individual Entries and one for Team Entries. Both can be downloaded and printed from these links. What - 46th Annual Dallas Twirling Festival
When - Saturday, February 11, 2017. Doors open at 7:00am. Contest begins at 8:00am
Where - DeSoto High School (Freshman Campus), 620 S. Westmoreland Road, DeSoto, TX 75115

Why - This competition is a legacy competition. Not only is it in its 46th year, which is something to be said on it's own, it is directed by a mother/daughter duo. Twirlers from all over Texas and surrounding states come to this competition. The contest is known for frequently having out of state judges, to allow for a wide variety of comments. The directors have had years, and years, and YEARS of experience directing competitions; therefore, the event runs smoothly and timely. They also bring an upbeat element of fun throughout the day!

CONTEST HASHTAG: #dallastwirlfest2017
For this event, we strongly encourage our Texas Twirlers to utilize the hashtag #dallastwirlfest2017 when posting photos of this competition on social media. Highlight Event: A highlighted event of this competition is the Mother/Daughter Duet category where mothers and their daughters compete in a duet routine for the judges. Since this contest is directed by a mother & daughter, it is a fitting contest for other mother & daughter pairs show off their talents!

Unique Feature: The awards are beautiful and PINK!  Nice sized trophies, unique first place pageant awards, and beautiful tiaras are awarded. You also can't forget the special ratings trophies and the vintage medals awarded to runners up.

Hello Texas Twirl Fans. Welcome to 2017!

Today we get to celebrate many things... the start of the New Year, the ending of the old one, the possibilities that lie ahead, the successes, and the failures, that we leave behind.

While the general consensus has been that 2016 wasn't quite the banner year that the world was hoping for, it was a great year in terms of increasing communication across the Texas Twirling Community.

I have been humbled at all of your usage of the TexasTwirl.com website and the excitement over this blog. I am so appreciative of all the responses, involvement, and kind words. Our mission is to help keep our sport and our community going strong by bringing us together. I hope to see both continue to thrive in the coming year by spreading even more communication across our great State.

When - Saturday, January 14, 2017. Doors open at 7:00 am. Contest begins at 8:00 am.
Where - The Woodlands College Park High School, 3701 College Park Dr, The Woodlands, TX 77384

*Picture on the left from the 2015 SW Regional Championship, used to showcase the facility size and ceiling height of the gym used for competition.

Why - Since this is the first competition of 2017, it is often one of the biggest of the season outside of the Regional and State competitions. Many coaches consider this contest to be the most accurate showing of what competition twirlers will face at the Southwest Regional Championship held later in the Spring. Many teams debut their routines here, and most of the twirling groups in the State will have representation. On top of that, the awards are extremely nice (tiaras, giant pageant trophies, the always popular light up trophies, Disney plushies, etc), and the contest runs very smooth for being as large as it is. It is definitely a 'must attend' for the season!

Highlighted Event
A highlighted event for this competition is the team portion of the competition. As mentioned above, many teams premier their routines at Twirl in the Woods, which means team routines you have never seen before will all hit the floor for the first time. This is where we get to see the starting point behind all those hours of teamwork and new choreography. It is so exciting to see where the teams all begin each season and compare it to how far they go by the time we reach State in June.

Unique Feature
A unique feature of the Twirl in the Woods competition is always the award ceremony! You have to love any awards ceremony that has the placement blocks, an awesome photographer, and utilizes amazing senior twirlers from around the State to help pass out the awards. As you can see in the above Team Pictures, for the 2016 Twirl in the Woods competition, the awards were passed out by Baylor Feature Twirler, and current Miss Texas, Caroline Carothers. Should be exciting to see who will help pass out the awards this year!

Any Last Comments? 
Big shout out and photo cred goes to Mickey's Majorette Dad, Edward Obias, who took all these great photos included in today's blog and will be also be taking the award ceremony photos at the event. Thanks Mr. Obias! We love awesome twirl dads, especially when they are also pretty great photographers.

Saturday Night Lights - 5A & 6A Playoffs!!!

Hello Texas Twirl Fans! We all know in Texas that football is a BIG DEAL! All season, the football players fight their way from game to game in hopes of making it into the State Playoffs. Baton Twirlers love football season because it gives our twirlers a chance to get out on the field and showcase their talents for the crowd.

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY many football players have been working all year for... The UIL 5A & 6A State Playoff Games!!! These games will be played on December 17th at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

While it is exciting that some amazing football will be going on... the Texas twirling community gets to celebrate as well because there will also be some AWESOME baton twirlers! We wanted to a take a minute to give a big shout out the the TWELVE Texas baton twirlers that will get to take the field at the AT&T Stadium tomorrow to perform in support of their school.
