Collegiate Twirler Spotlight - Texas Christian University

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

College Football is back in our lives, and we could not be more excited for the amazing college twirling that will be happening this season! We are excited to continue featuring these talented athletes, and we hope you will enjoy learning more about them too!

This week’s Collegiate Twirler Spotlight is the Texas Christian University Feature Twirlers!

Texas Christian University (also known as TCU), located in Fort Worth, Texas, is the home of the Horned Frogs, and a long history of amazing twirlers repping the purple and white. This includes the awesome Fall 2023 Feature Twirlers: KK Tunnell, Stephanie McBurnett, Haylee Chiariello, and Molly Green!

We asked these ladies what brought them to TCU, and they all had amazing things to say about this University. KK told us she enjoyed how close she got to everyone. “I love that TCU is a small college but has the feeling of being a big college. You see people you know everywhere you and really get to know people in your major.” Haylee felt it would be a great place to continue her educational journey. “The campus is so beautiful, and I was offered incredible academic scholarships. When I visited, I knew I would have a unique perspective and role on campus as a Native American student.” For Molly, the draw came from the “amazing academic programs and getting to twirl alongside other amazing twirlers!”

However, for Stephanie, it was a family connection that made it a dream come true. “I chose TCU for a variety of reasons! 1. My oldest sister, Emily, graduated from TCU, and I had always wanted to follow in her footsteps, so I had to go to TCU!! 2. TCU has one of the top business schools in Texas and the United States. As someone who wanted to pursue degrees in both Finance and Accounting, TCU was the clear winner for my education. 3. Twirling!! Being able to twirl for a collegiate marching band had been a dream since taking the field as a high school twirler. When I was accepted to be a TCU Feature Twirler, it was a clear choice and one of the happiest days of my life!!!!”

We asked the twirlers what their favorite thing is about the school, and they all agreed that the school pride wat TCU is amazing! As KK told us, “Everywhere you go you’ll hear someone say ‘go frogs!’” Stephanie said the TCU spirit even extends off campus. “My favorite thing about TCU is the amount of school spirit we have on campus and within the DFW community!” This definitely includes the alum, too! As Molly tells us, “It is amazing how much love all of the people (alum included) have for horned frog football!!” Haylee has had a special experience this year with her brother joining her on campus. “Having my brother at TCU has been the best experience! I love sharing this journey with him. TCU really is family and I love everything about TCU!”

We had to know what the best traditions are at TCU! KK and Molly agree that it is the Riff Ram chant! “I especially love doing the chant after every touch down”, says KK. Stephanie enjoys the spirit of the holidays on campus. “The best TCU tradition in my opinion is the annual Christmas Tree lighting they do after Thanksgiving. The whole TCU and surrounding DFW community come together for a whole celebration and the lighting of the TCU Christmas tree.” Haylee’s favorite tradition isn’t a thing they do, but a symbol they have. As she tells us, her favorite tradition is the HYPNOTOAD! “It slays every opponent!”

Speaking of Toads… Did you know that the game fireworks even tie back to their beloved mascot? As Stephanie tells us, “My favorite fun fact about TCU is that anytime TCU scores a touchdown at a football game, they shoot off 2 red fireworks from the end zone signifying a horned frog shooting blood from its eyes to scare off predators.” How cool is that?

Now that we have learned more about life at TCU, let’s learn about these fantastic twirlers!

After college, Haylee plans to continue her education and earn a JD with an emphasis in Native American Law. “I understand the great importance of fitness and health and wellness programming in the Native community. I plan to use digital media to promote healthy lifestyles through dance and other artistic expressions (including twirling!) for Native populations.”

The competition placement she is the proudest of earning was when she was Top 3 in the All-American Girl event at Nationals, and when she won her Intermediate Pageant at Southwest Regionals. Molly’s favorite competition trick is “anything catch blind”, and her favorite field trick is a toss double leap. Friday Night Lights Feature - Goldthwaite High School

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

We have returned and those Friday Night Lights are back to brighten up our weeks! We could not be happier to see twirlers all over Texas back on the field, and we can’t wait to see many more amazing moments as football season continues. As those Friday Night Lights turn on each week, we hope to see everyone continue to enjoy the sights and sounds of football teams, marching bands, and our favorite, lots of talented Texas baton twirlers!

Each season this blog likes to get to know many of our awesome Texas twirlers a little better by learning about their experiences. We will be meeting many High School twirlers throughout the season with the Friday Night Lights Features and discovering more about our Texas Collegians with the Collegiate Twirler Spotlights. We will also be having many of our High School and Collegiate twirlers take over our Social Media Story for their Game Days! Make sure to follow us on Instagram @twirlingiscatchingtx or at facebook.com/twirlingiscatchingtx so you don't miss a thing!

This season’s first Friday Night Lights Feature is the Goldthwaite High School Senior Feature Twirler!

Goldthwaite, Texas, is a small town with a population of ~1.7K people that is about 1.5 miles North West of Austin, or West of Waco, and the home of the Eagles. It is also the home of a generational tradition of baton twirlers! Not only does the High School have a constant stream of twirlers, but the Middle School also has a program where future GHS students learn the skills they need to one day be a Feature themselves. Friday evening, we got to experience a Game Day at GHS through the Instastory Takeover. Now we get to learn more about representing the Eagles with Goldthwaite High School Senior Feature Twirler Addison Lee!

We asked Addison, who goes by Addie, about the audition process at GHS. “We all go into the gym, warm up, and draw a number from the director. Then we go out in the hall and tryout one-by-one by doing all the required skills and our prepared routine. Then we wait for results.”

In addition to Addie shining on the field each week, GHS also has a sophomore Feature Twirler, Emily Bartek! Emily is an avid runner and was not able to be at the game on Friday due to a busy week with a back-to-back cross-country meets. Most Fridays you can see Emily and Addison sharing the field and wow’ing the crowd together. As friends, co-features, and teammates on the Twirl ATX Diamonds team out of Austin (for which they both travel 3 hours round trip for rehearsals and lessons), these two are quite the pair. A fun fact about Addison and Emily is that in 2022 Addison won the Beginning Junior Southwest Regional Pageant, bringing a regional pageant title home to GHS for the first time. Then in 2023, Emily did the same, bringing the same title back home to Goldthwaite for the second consecutive year! How cool is that?

To learn more about Goldthwaite High School, we asked Addie what her favorite thing is about the school, and she said it is the relationship between the teachers and the students. “Since our school is so small all the students are able to connect with the teachers on a deeper level.”

Being such a tight-knit school, they must have great traditions! Addie told us that ‘The Battle of the River’ is one of their best! “This is the football game against our biggest rival team, the San Saba Armadillos. This is always a huge game and almost the whole town goes!”

Another event that Addie looks forward to each year is the Lighting of the Letters, and this year will be especially exciting! “Although our school has already had homecoming, we are doing our lighting of the letters a different week, and I am most looking forward to it because this year I will get to twirl fire!”

Now that we have heard more about GHS, let’s learn more about Addie!

Addison Lee, Senior
Competition Level: Advanced
Addison has been twirling for seven years. She is a member of Twirl ATX and is coached by Ashley Wood as well as Whitney Coons & Kaylee Williams. The competition titles she is the proudest of winning was when she won both the 2023 Texas State Senior Intermediate Solo & X-Strut. Addie’s favorite contest tricks are “any type of roll”, and her favorite field trick is a toss walkover. In baton twirling, she has been most inspired by former Tarleton State University & Goldthwaite HS Feature Twirler (and Twirl ATX Teammate), Kaley Dowell. “She helped me get started, taught me some of my first tricks, and encouraged me to work hard for my goals. I also loved to watch her twirl when I was little at pep rallies and games to when she twirled in college.” After High School, Addie plans to attend a four-year college to study Business & Marketing.

Fun Facts!

Favorite Color: Sage and emerald green

Favorite TV show or Movie: Gilmore girls

Favorite Book: Throne of glass series

Favorite Food or Drink:

Favorite Quote or Life Motto…

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” - Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh

When she is not twirling, she loves to...

“Read! Reading is my way to escape stress and the world around me.”

Something people might not know about me is...

“I am really shy. You may find this hard to believe because I get out on the field and twirl /perform in front of large groups of people, but I am actually an introvert.”

The best non twirling life skill she has gained from baton twirling is...

“Self-Confidence! Getting out on the field, in front of a stand full of people, can be intimidating, but I have learned to embrace it and just have fun. Through that process I have gained a ton of self-confidence!”

Most memorable advice from her coach...

“To have fun! It is good to focus on technique, timing, free hand, etc., but having fun is what makes all the hard work worth it.”

Advice to future high school twirlers...

“Repetition is key! When I struggled to learn certain tricks, I adopted the “if it first you don’t succeed, try, try again” mantra. Once you land that trick once, repetition is key in perfecting it.”

Funniest memory as a baton twirler...

“During meet the eagles, at the very end of the routine I did a firebird. When I came down my ankle basically folded the ground and I fell on my butt. It was embarrassing but I have rolled my ankle so many times before that it’s just funny at this point.”

Favorite thing about marching season...

“I love marching/twirling with the band as well as playing in the stands. We always get so hyped and excited for football even though half of us don’t understand a thing about it.”

Favorite tradition or inside joke within your band program...

“Our former band director threw the then assistant (now head) band director’s conducting stick at us while she was conducting and broke it. She kept conducting because, of course, the show must go on. So now it is taped to the wall in the band hall.”

What she will miss the most when marching season is over…

“I will miss twirling with Emily! We have twirled together for the past 2 years for our school and the past 3 years on the same competitive team. We have gotten really close through twirling so I’m definitely going to miss her.”

We want to say thank you to Addie for sharing her game day with us. Good luck to Addie on the rest of her senior year, and we hope both Addie and Emily have an amazing rest of the season together!

Collegiate Twirler Spotlight - NC State University

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

We just love that College Football is back in full swing. The past few weekends have included many great moments, including some awesome field twirling. We loved getting to follow along with a #TeamTexas Twirler turned Wolfpack Feature Twirler as her and her co-features took over our Instastory on Saturday, and now we are excited to have them as this week’s Collegiate Twirler Spotlight.

This week’s Spotlight is the North Carolina State University Feature Twirlers!

North Carolina State University is located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is the home of the Wolfpack! It is also home to a wonderful twirling program led by coach Bethany Shreiner with assistance from Courtney White. The current 2023-24 Wolfpack feature twirlers include Claudia Swauger, Kira Greer, Robbie Leske, and #TeamTexas twirler, Amber Sorenson!

We asked why NC State, and Amber told us it just felt like home. “I choose NC State for the amazing baton twirling program and the academic programs! One great thing about this university is the number of clubs and events to get involved with in addition to the wonderful band program!”

Speaking of the band program, a fun fact about the “Power Sound of the South” Marching Band is that this year they broke their record for the most band members in the history of the program with 380 members!

While attending NC State was an easy decision for Amber, we wanted to know why she chose to attend school out of state. “I choose to attend a university outside of Texas for new opportunities and new experiences. Being 20 hours away from home is difficult at time, but it was the best decision to allow me to see more of the country and world around me.”

In order to become a Pack Twirler, we wanted to know what the audition process was like, and they told us that “all new and returning members have to attend an in person audition every spring. This audition consists of running a mile, performing an individual routine, learning and performing a group routine, and an interview in front of a panel of judges.”

Now that we have learned a little about NC State, lets learn more about the twirlers!

Amber Sorenson
Amber is a Freshman from Round Rock, Texas, that is majoring in human biology with a nonprofit minor. In addition to being a Pack Twirler, Amber is a member of the University’s Honors Program and the founder of her own non-profit, Amber’s Spirit Batons. Amber is an advanced competitor that has been twirling for 14 years. She is coached by Ashley Wood as well as Whitney Coons from Twirl ATX, and is a member of the Forte Artistic Group out of Atlanta, GA, which is coached by Colleen Middleton and Courtney White. The competition title she is the proudest of was when Forte became the 2022 and 2023 National Artistic Group Champions, and then placed Top 5 at the IBTF World Championship! Amber’s favorite competition trick is a tick tock double illusion, and her favorite field trick is a leap walkover. In baton twirling, Amber’s biggest twirling inspiration has been her now co-feature Claudia Swauger. “It has been an absolute dream come true to be able to twirl along side her this year!” After college, she hopes to continue to medical school to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Claudia Swauger
Claudia is a Senior from Niles, Ohio, that is majoring in Nutrition Science with a minor in Sports Science. In addition to being a Pack twirler, Claudia is also a sister of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and a member of the Pre-PT Club and Sports Science Club. Claudia is an advanced/elite level twirler that has been twirling for 18 years. She is coached by Kathy Harris and Ann Kennedy as a member of the Wheaton Dance/Twirl teams. The competition title she is the proudest of earning was when she was named the Junior Miss Majorette of America in 2016. Claudia’s favorite competition trip is a one spin triple, and her favorite field trick is a leap walkover. In baton twirling, Claudia’s biggest twirling inspiration is her sister, and former WVU Feature Twirler, Jillian Swauger. After college, she hopes to become a physical therapist and work with athletes or a college sports team.

Kira Greer
Kira is a Senior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that is majoring in Political Science with a minor in Environmental Science and History. In addition to being a Pack twirler, Kira is in the Pre-Law Student Association and the Honors College. Kira is an advanced level twirler that that has been twiring for 18 years. She was coached by Sherry Vignolli Parisi as a member of the Modernettes. The competition title she is the proudest of was when the Modernettes became World Corp Champions! Kira’s favorite competition trick is a horizontal double illusion catch left, and her favorite field trick is a spinning hitch kick. In baton twirling, Kira’s biggest twirling inspiration was her older sister, Lauren Greer. “I wouldn’t be twirling if it weren’t for her!” After she graduates in the Spring, she will be continuing her education in law school!

Robbie Leske
Robbie is a Junior from Pawling, New York, that is majoring in Physics & Chemistry with a Math Minor. In addition to being a Pack Twirler, Robbie is also in the Society of Physics Students. Robbie is an advanced level twirler that has been twirling for 16 years. He is a member of the Silver Starlites and is coached by Allison Stuart. The competition title he is the proudest of earning was when he was names the Senior Men’s Grand National Twirling Champion. Robbie’s favorite competition trick is any oppositional 2-baton trick, and his favorite field trick is a leg bounce. In baton twirling, Robbie’s biggest twirling inspiration is his sister, Annamarie, who is a former NC State Feature! After college, Robbie hopes to work in the solar panel industry.

We of course had to know what the best NC State University tradition was, and we got to learn about several fun ones! “One of our most favorite traditions is that whenever an NC Statew team wins, they light the bell tower red! There is also a statue on campus called the strolling professor. It is a former chemistry professor, and it is good luck if you rub his head before any chemistry exam.

Another fun fact about NC State is that they have their own creamery off campus, and they make their own ice cream called Howling Cow. Yum!

Finally we wanted to know their favorite thing about the NC State Marching Band Program:
  • “Every time the Power Sound of the South enters the field for pregame, they dance around and do this thing called the dirty shuffle, and it is my favorite because it gets everyone so hype to perform pregame!” - Amber
  • “My favorite part of the NC State marching band is how unique the culture in every section is! There are so many unique traditions, and it really brings the excitement to the rest of the band and anyone watching!” - Robbie
  • “The band is such a close-knit group and I have met some of my best friends from it!” - Claudia
  • “My favorite thing about the Power Sound of the South is how talented every section is. They work so hard and come up with the most creative shows! Also, they make us twirlers feel so special and involved. Best band EVER!” – Kira

We want to thank the NC State twirlers for sharing their Game Day with us this past Saturday through their Instastory Takeover, and we loved learning more about them! We wish them all an amazing rest of their fall season, and we can’t wait to see Amber back in Texas later this year. Go Pack!
