Friday Night Lights Feature - CT Johnson High School

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

Happy last few days of October! How are we already here? The football season is winding down, and the competition season is about to start. Just a few more twirlers left to feature, including this wonderful duo!

Each season this blog likes to get to know many of our awesome Texas twirlers a little better by learning about their experiences. We will be meeting many High School twirlers throughout the season with the Friday Night Lights Features and discovering more about our Texas Collegians with the Collegiate Twirler Spotlights. We will also be having many of our High School and Collegiate twirlers take over our social media Story for their Game Days! Make sure to follow us on Instagram @twirlingiscatchingtx or at facebook.com/twirlingiscatchingtx so you don't miss a thing!

Our next Friday Night Lights Feature is the Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Feature Twirlers!

Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson High School, also known as CTJ, is located in San Antonio, TX, and is the home of Jaguars. CTJ is very well known Nationally in the marching band world, as they are multiple time BOA Grand National Finalists with their edgy and modern marching productions. CTJ also has a history of pretty great baton twirlers, some of which have even been included in their marching productions. You have to love a school that is Nationally competitive AND appreciates their baton twirlers! This year’s CTJ Feature Twirlers are Kinsey Simeon and Joslyn Rodriguez!

A fun fact about twirling at CTJ is that every CTJ Twirler is a feature! They get to twirl on the sidelines as well as on the field at halftimes and during pep rallies! In order to earn their position, they attended a live interview with their band director.

We asked the twirler what their favorite thing is about attending CTJ and they said that “there is so much community between students!” This leads to amazing Pep Rallies and other great traditions, such as the Band’s March-A-Thon. “It is not only the biggest fundraiser for our program, we also end it by getting sprayed by the firefighters!”

Finally, we asked what they were looking forward to the most this season, and they said it had to be “Just everything about Football Season!”

Now that we have heard more about twirling at CTJ, let’s learn more about the twirlers!

Collegiate Twirler Spotlight - Stephen F Austin State University

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

The weather is finally beginning to change, and it is starting to almost feel like Fall here in Texas! We love this part of the season, and we are once again excited to feature another set of our wonderful Texas Twirlers. We really enjoyed following these twirlers during their Instastory Takeover this past weekend, and we are happy to share more about these amazing representatives of our sport.

Our next Collegiate Twirler Spotlight is on the Stephen F Austin State University Twirl-O-Jacks!

Stephen F Austin State University, located in Nacogdoches, TX, has a "timeless" reputation regarding baton twirlers thanks to their Twirl-O-Jack twirling line and Feature Twirler. The TOJ's are known for their "Grace...Poise...Style!" They perform at football games and many events representing their university. For lots of twirlers, especially in East Texas, the Twirl-O-Jacks are a twirling institution. This year’s Twirl-O-Jacks include Feature Twirler - Kellen Coke, Head Twirl-O-Jack Clair Hunter, Assistant Head Twirl-O-Jacks Avery Bryan & Reese Richardson, and Twirlers Amairanie Banuelos, Ashlyn Vest, Caitlin Drennan, Elizabeth Bruwer, Elizabeth Smith, Maddie Minter, Natalie Joseph, and Sarah Woodworth.

The SFA Twirl-O-Jacks were established in 1956 under the band directorship of Jimmie Hudgins. “Our band is one of few collegiate bands that march both military and corp style. While Mr. Hudgins coined the name “Twirl-O-Jacks,” the group’s unique style was created by then head T-O-J, Pat (Griffin) Bridges. The unique twirling style of the T-O-J’s continued throughout the years under Twirl-O-Jack Coordinator, Joan (Griffin) Bridges until 2007, when she passed the torch to one of her very own students [and current TOJ coach] Candice (Pelzl) Curbow.”

We asked the TOJ’s what their audition process looked like to earn one of these prestigious spots. “Twirl-O-Jack line auditions consist of learning and performing a group routine. Purple Team Twirl-O-Jack Auditions (the competitive team) require both the group routine and a prepared solo as well as demonstration of advanced skills. Feature Twirler candidates must submit a head shot, resume and audition video to the band directors and twirling coach. Candidates that receive an in-person audition invitation will be asked to perform a prepared solo and a self-choreographed solo to music given to candidates at auditions.”

There are many reasons someone selects their college, so we had to know what brought these twirlers to SFA! While the overwhelming response was the amazing twirling program, the campus community, family legacy, and academic programs were all factors as well.
  • Claire - “I chose to go to SFA because I wanted to be a Twirl-O-Jack! I have always attended their Timeless Twirl-O-Jack summer camps and all I wanted to be was a TOJ!”
  • Avery - “I chose to attend SFA because I liked the twirling program and my family has been going to SFA for generations!”
  • Reese - “I chose SFA because I wanted to be a SFA Twirl-O-Jacks! I’ve always loved the unique dance twirl style, and have many mentors that were past TOJ’s!”
  • Caitlin - “I chose to attend SFA because of the music program and the closeness to home.”
  • Elizabeth S. - “I chose to attend SFAafter visiting a showcase Saturday and completely falling in love with the campus!! This place was home the moment I stepped in!”
  • Elizabeth B - “I chose to attend SFA because they offer good STEM programs, and I wanted to continue my twirling career around talented individuals and be a part of a good team.”
With such a great history, and a great location, we wanted to know what their favorite thing was about attending SFA. Avery, Reese, and Caitlin all love the campus. “The pretty scenery and the people, the beautiful pine trees, and the atmosphere! The campus is so beautiful.” Elizabeth B also agrees with the beauty of the campus, but also enjoys the food and campus energy. “The trees around the campus make me feel at home, the food at the dining hall is delicious, and the band has a bold sound that keeps the energy up!” The Band is also a big one for Elizabeth S. “My favorite thing about SFA is definitely the band!! I’ve made lasting friendships and memories in my short time with the LMB and I can’t wait to make even more!”

Traditions are a big part of campus life at SFA. Whether they are school traditions, or band traditions, you know these twirlers love being a part of them!
  • Avery - “One of the best traditions at SFA is that the school provides axe handles for all of the freshmen so they can use them in the student section! We also have the purple lights that shine over the whole campus after a lumberjack win!”
  • Reese - “One of my favorite traditions is that classic Wabash Cannonball! The Lumberjack Marching Band plays it at pregame and Twirl-O-Jacks have been performing it for centuries.”
  • Caitlin - “One of my favorite traditions is receiving an axe handle that can be decorated how you choose.”
  • Elizabeth S. - “My favorite SFA tradition is the ring dip!! I will be getting my class ring and participating in the ring dip this December and I can’t wait to join in on it!”
  • Elizabeth B - “Decorating our axe handles, homecoming parade, the enthusiastic Purple Haze student section, and the LMB taking the field for pregame and halftime. We also got to teach the band how to line dance for our recent halftime show which was fun!”
  • Caitlin - “A running joke within the band is calling our assistant band director, Dr. Kaatz, “Mighty Mouse”.
Finally, we wanted to know what these twirlers are looking forward to the most this season! Reese told us she loves the end of season events. “I’m most looking forward to a potential play-off game and our annual band banquet!” Caitlin is also excited about the band banquet, while Avery is looking forward to all the lasts with Kellen and Clair. “I am happy to have one last season with our seniors!” Elizabeth can’t wait for the weather to change. “I love halftime during the cold football games!"

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

Another great weekend of twirling means we are at the halfway point of the regular football season. Can you believe it? Only a few more weeks with these amazing twirlers representing on their High School fields. We hope all of you are enjoying it while it lasts. We know we will miss it! In the meantime, we have another Feature Interview with one of our awesome Texas Twirlers for your reading enjoyment this lovely October Monday.

Our next Friday Night Lights Feature is the Goldthwaite High School Feature Twirler!

Goldthwaite High School is located in Goldthwaite, Texas, a small town with a population of ~1.7K people that is about 1.5 hours northwest of Austin, or West of Waco, and the home of the Eagles. It is also the home of a generational tradition of baton twirlers, including this second-generation Goldthwaite Twirler, Emily Bartek!

A fun thing about Emily twirling at Goldthwaite is that her mother was also a GHS Twirler! It means so much to Emily to follow in her mother’s footsteps and be able to honor her in that way. Emily also loves the response she gets from other schools at football games. “Being a twirler at Goldthwaite is so fun because there aren’t really any other twirlers in that area or at the schools we play, so people are always excited to see one!”

In order to earn this position, we asked Emily what the audition process was like, and she told us that it depends on how many people are trying out. “I had to try out my first year but ever since, I’ve always been the only twirler so I haven’t been asked to audition again.”

Being a born and raised Goldthwaite resident, we wanted to know what her favorite part about being a GHS Eagle is, and Emily said it is the community! “My favorite thing about my school is how involved and supportive everyone is about everything!”

With such strong community spirit, we wanted to know what Emily’s favorite tradition was, and she couldn’t decide between two of them. “In my opinion the best traditions at my school are our lighting of the letters during homecoming week and Ag Olympics, which is a competition between each grade!”

As a twirler, Emily is both a trumpet player with the marching band, and their twirler. With these roles she gets to enjoy the band from both sides, but her favorite part is their Monday night marching practices!

Finally, we asked Emily what she is most looking forward to this season, and she said she couldn’t wait for her Senior night as it is something she has been watching others participate in for years. “I can’t believe it is my turn!”

Now that we have heard more about twirling at GHS, let’s learn more about Emily!

Emily Bartek, Senior

Emily has been twirling since 6th grade. She is a member of Twirl ATX and is coached by Ashley Wood as well as Whitney Coons and Jassandra Sadler. The competition title she is the proudest of earning was when she won the 16 year old Beginner National X-Strut at AYOP this past summer. Her favorite competition trick is an illusion one spin, and her favorite field trick is a toss cartwheel. In baton twirling she has been most inspired by all of the amazing people she has met through baton twirling! After High school she plans on running track and XC at the college level and studying to become a physical therapist.

Collegiate Twirler Spotlight - University of Colorado Boulder Feature Twirlers

Hello Texas Twirl Fans!

As we cross into October, which already puts us almost halfway through football season, we are excited to feature our next collegiate twirlers. We hope you enjoyed following their Instastory Takeover on Saturday, and we know you will enjoy learning more about these awesome twirlers today.

Our next Collegiate Twirler Spotlight is on the University of Colorado Boulder Feature Twirlers!

The University of Colorado Boulder campus is located in the beautiful town of Boulder, Colorado, and is the home of the Buffalos! It is also the home of today’s Collegiate Twirler Spotlight, Feature Twirlers Izzy Pell and Ryleigh Richards!

A fun fact about the Buff Twirlers is that they get a lot of independence within the program. “The Feature Twirlers at CU decide their own choreography, drill during halftime performances, and design their own costumes!”

What a fun opportunity for them to really get creative within the sport! In order to earn these positions, we asked about the audition process. “The audition process is 3 steps: 1. Send in your compilation video with a twirling resume and professional headshot/twirling photo. 2. We then invite you to audition in person. 3. In person auditions include a 3-4 minute routine showcasing 1-3+ baton skills plus your own routine to the CU fight song and an interview from our judging panel.”

Both twirlers came to CU from out of state - Izzy being a Texas girl and Ryleigh coming from Massachusetts - so we had to know why they chose Colorado. Izzy told us that the campus was an easy sell! “I chose CU because the campus is beautiful! Being surrounded by nature brings me such a sense of peace, especially on a stressful day! Everyone I met while touring was incredibly welcoming, and I immediately felt at home. I also loved the idea of getting to twirl alongside a fellow Feature Twirler! Ryleigh and I have become best friends, making game days even more fun!” For Ryleigh, it was about starting a new adventure. “I chose to attend my school because I have always wanted to live somewhere new and I loved the campus and bio program!”

The choice to move from Texas to Colorado was an important one for Izzy, but one she feels great about. “I am originally from Dallas, Texas, but chose to go out of state because of Boulder's gorgeous environment. Being able to wake up to the mountains every day, take hikes and see wildlife, and not walk outside in 100-degree weather is amazing!” For Ryleigh, this was a time in which she could explore and experience new things. “I have always wanted to move back to Massachusetts when I am older, so I felt like this was my one shot to experience living somewhere new!”

Besides the beautiful scenery, the school has really brought the college experience to life for these twirlers. As Ryleigh told us, “I absolutely love the view, but what I am enjoying most is meeting so many new people every day!” Izzy agreed and said the incredible fan base and community involvement has to be her favorite thing about attending CU! “One thing unique about the Golden Buffalo Marching Band is we don’t just perform on game days, but we also get to be part of Stampede the night before every home game. This is a special performance of halftime and stand tunes on Pearl Street, which everyone in the community attends, to support CU and get excited for the game. The energy from the fans is exhilarating to perform to and there are always so many little future buffs, fascinated with twirling that we get to talk to!”

CU also has its share of amazing traditions within the University. While their live Buffalo, Ralphie, leading the team out of the tunnel every pregame and halftime definitely tops the list of great traditions, they also really enjoy the band traditions as they march into the stadium. “When we march to the stadium, the drumline plays their cadence “Flatirons” and every section has their own lyrics they sing to the cadence as we march into Game Day.”

Finally, we wanted to know what they are looking forward to the most this season, and they are both really hopeful that CU will make a bowl game! We are sending some serious Sko Buffs vibes that their hope comes true!
